What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye disease is a common condition characterized by insufficient tear production or poor tear quality, leading to inadequate lubrication of the eyes.

Symptoms:

  • Red, scratchy, sore, or itchy eyes
  • Burning or stinging sensations
  • Feeling of something in the eyes
  • Blurred vision that may change after blinking
  • Watery eyes (as a reflex response)
  • Light sensitivity

Causes:

  • Environmental factors (dry air, wind)
  • Prolonged screen time
  • Aging
  • Hormonal changes (e.g., menopause)
  • Medical conditions (e.g., arthritis, diabetes)
  • Medications (e.g., antihistamines, antidepressants)
  • Laser eye surgery
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Contact lens wear

Diagnosis:

  • Comprehensive eye exam
  • Dry eye assessment with Topcon MYAH
    • Analyses tear film quality
    • Tear break up time
    • Meibomian gland dropout

Treatment

  • There are many different eye drops we can prescribe for each dry eye patient. We evaluate on a case-by-case basis, to ensure we create a dry eye management plan that works best for each individual.

Complications if untreated:

  • Persistent eye discomfort
  • Vision fluctuations
  • Potential corneal damage in extreme cases

Dry eye disease is a chronic condition that requires ongoing management. While there’s no cure, various treatments can effectively manage symptoms and improve quality of life for those affected.
